Meet Mrs. Chernich
Hi! My name is Mrs. Bethany Chernich and I am the Music Teacher at Hornung Elementary! Prior to joining the Hornung community in 2020, I began my teaching career in 2012, where I taught at
St. Patrick Catholic School in the BAS Shared Services program. At St. Pat's I taught JK-8th grade General Music, Band, Choir, and Orff Percussion Ensemble.
I completed my Bachelors Degree in Music Education at Saginaw Valley State University. While at SVSU, I participated in multiple university ensembles including the Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Cardinal Singers, and a saxophone quartet. Since graduating, I have been invited back to SVSU a couple of times to speak to undergraduates about being a music educator. In regards to my Masters Degree, I completed my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction through Western Governors University.
After beginning in the BAS Shared Services program, I became a member of the Detroit Orff Schulwerk Association as well as the American Orff Schulwerk Association. Orff Schulwerk is an elementary music pedagogy that I align my teaching philosophies and methods with. Over the summers of 2017-2019 I took courses to earn my Orff Schulwerk teacher certification. As of July 2019, I am now an Orff-certified teacher, so I bring a wealth of musical knowledge and experience to your students.
Outside of my teaching career, I enjoy playing board games, reading, traveling (especially to Cedar Point!) and spending time with my family. My husband, Mr. Nick Chernich, is the Music Teacher over at Hawkins Elementary. We have two young sons, Teddy and Benton, who are both under the age of three. I grew up in Tawas, where my family travels to on occasional weekends as well as in the spring to help my parents with their Pure Maple Syrup farm. We also have several chickens and ducks, as well as our two cats, Dave and Ash.
I am thrilled to be the Music Teacher at Hornung and work with such wonderful staff, students, and families!
